The Christopher Hitchens Junta

This will be a Christopher Hitchens memorial page.  Feel free to add vids/ articles , quotes or whatever relating to the Hitch.  I’ll periodically throw up a debate that we could all watch and then initiate a discussion.  Any ideas for this page will be appreciated.. just leave a comment on this page if you have any.  Thanks, teajr.

I’ll begin in reverse by posting his last speech.

Another brilliant talk by Christopher Hitchens – God is not Great

This was a good “through the years” tribute to Hitchens:

That was fantastic, never seen it before.. Thanks

I like that one very much!

I have no idea what is going on, teajr, but I tried to change some settings, and my comments got deleted, and there’s a tin hat woman picture and a ghost picture I don’t want on my home page.

There was also a comment I read from you, but it doesn’t show on the thread. I can see it on the top right about a Rabbi Moderator for Hitchens.

I am posting that video below. I think this is the right one.

As you said, its difficult to pick a favorite quote by Hitchens. I was hoping to find the text for the Freedom of Speech one, I loved what he said, but I’ll have to transcribe that one. This is one from his debate with Turek. A lot of these Christian Evangelical Pastors really liked Hitchens.

    Quote from Hitchens-Turek debate:
The deist says he can tell what God wants of me, what length I should shave off the end of my penis, if I’m a boy or have a male child, or off the clitoris if it’s a female child. He knows to the exactitude what the proportions of that should be, what the diet should be, what the dietary laws ought to be, who I should sleep with and in what position and various other—you can—and since God doesn’t ever directly appear and say, “Do it this way,” it’s done for Him, and this is really convenient, by human representatives who claim to act in His name. So that’s why I think your standard of proof should be a great deal higher because if you—the reason this point is important to you is because it would mean real power in the only world that actually exists, which is the material world, of you over me. And you wonder why I’m not keen.

Hitchens second debate with Rabbi Shmuley, with moderator Neil Gilman:

    • teajr says:

That was great but the one I was thinking of was a panel. I’ll try to find it.

      • rickmadigan says:

I liked this one, where he totally went after Rabbi Kushner, saying that a humane person like himself would say and think disgustingly wicked things, proved his Hitchens’ point about religions. Shame on you, he said to the Rabbi at 5:00

      • teajr says:

That was the line that got me really thinking about the circumcision of boys in a negative context. I did a lot of research on FGM in school but I had a moral block as it related to boys, a hold-over from the religious indoctrination of my youth. When I saw Hitch smack that Rabbi, he was smacking me. We just had our 3rd child a couple of months ago, (our first boy) and we didn’t have him circumcised, which is directly related to my revelation stemming from that debate. For the record, he hasn’t turned into a pillar of salt yet. Amazing isn’t it? sidenote.. Righteous Indignation=Awesome book!

      • rickmadigan says:

Was that the panel you were looking for, btw?

I had a super scary one for FGM, which totally freaked out my Prog Professor who was all about multiculturalism. Poor dear. She asked one of her trusted students to put some inspiring video up for the online board to make up for the scary one. Lol!

      • teajr says:

No, and I spent some time this morning trying to find it. I just don’t remember which panel it was.. I’ll keep looking and post it when I find it.

The one other Rabbi I remember was the skinny funny guy from a megasynagogue in CA. But they really liked each other, and Hitchens was invited for Passover at his house that year.

    • teajr says:

I saw your post on CTH, are you into ebooks?

      • rickmadigan says:

Are you kidding me? I am a total Luddite. They’ve had to drag me kicking and screaming into the 21st century. I’m gonna check it out at the B&N store in town.

      • teajr says:

Yeah, but I think they use machines to mass print the books though 😉 I know what you mean, I have too many books as it is.. I’ll have to down-size b/f we move next year.

      • rickmadigan says:

I gave away over one thousand of my books when I moved. I kept about 500 I think, and most of them have the author’s signatures, such as Dawkins and people I personally knew and was friends with, through the years. Surprising, how many authors I knew. Enjoy your day, I’m gonna check out B&N.

Hi Teajr, thank you for nice conversations. You are the first Conservative Atheist I met since Hitchens. You should know, I don’t actually believe in the God of the Bible. Email me I will explain what I can’t on the blog (its on the About page).

I won’t be blogging any more. I simply wanted to put the truth out there about O’Mara, to help Shellie’s case. All the best to you. 🙂

My favorite limericks by Hitchens. I love it when they are done with a British accent:
